Stereotype Content Model02:16

Stereotype Content Model

15.7K
The Stereotype Content Model (SCM) was first proposed by Susan Fiske and her colleagues (Fiske, Cuddy, Glick & Xu, 2002; see also Fiske, 2012 and Fiske, 2017). The SCM specifies that when someone encounters a new group, they will stereotype them based on two metrics: warmth—or that group’s perceived intent, and how likely they are to provide help or inflict harm—and competence—or their ability to carry out that objective. Depending on the warmth-competence...

Causes of Similarity-Dissimilarity Effect

353
The similarity-dissimilarity effect, a fundamental concept in social psychology, explains how interpersonal similarities and differences influence attraction and social interactions. This effect is supported by three key psychological perspectives: balance theory, social comparison theory, and consensual validation.Balance Theory and Cognitive ConsistencyBalance theory, developed by Fritz Heider, posits that individuals seek cognitive consistency in their relationships. When two people share...

Groupthink01:34

Groupthink

50.4K
When in group settings, we are often influenced by the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors around us. Groupthink is another phenomenon of conformity where modification of the opinions of members in a group aligns with what they believe is the group consensus (Janis, 1972). In such situations, the group often takes action that individuals would not perform outside the group setting because groups make more extreme decisions than individuals do. Moreover, groupthink can hinder opposing trains of...

Conduct Disorder01:28

Conduct Disorder

960
Conduct disorder is a complex mental health diagnosis characterized by a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior that violates societal norms, the rights of others, or age-appropriate rules. The diagnostic criteria for conduct disorder require the presence of at least three problematic behaviors within the past 12 months, with at least one occurring in the past six months. These behaviors are grouped into four categories: aggression toward people and animals; destruction of property;...

Relationship Formation02:12

Relationship Formation

46.4K
What do you think is the single most influential factor in determining with whom you become friends and whom you form romantic relationships? You might be surprised to learn that the answer is simple: the people with whom you have the most contact. This most important factor is proximity. You are more likely to be friends with people you have regular contact with. For example, there are decades of research that shows that you are more likely to become friends with people who live in your dorm,...

  • The Chicago Consensus meeting aimed to improve care for intersex disorders.
  • A decade later, this review assesses the Consensus's impact on clinical practice and research.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the impact of the Chicago Consensus on the management of disorders of sex development (DSD).
  • To identify areas for future improvement in DSD diagnosis, outcome prediction, and quality of life.

Main Methods:

  • Review of clinical practice and research advancements since the Chicago Consensus.
  • Analysis of DSD-related publications, meetings, and the integration of psychological and social sciences.

Main Results:

  • Significant increase in DSD publications and international meetings.
  • Enhanced multidisciplinary team working and a more holistic approach to DSD management.
  • Progress in nomenclature, DSD classification, and collective case registries.

Conclusions:

  • The Chicago Consensus has demonstrably advanced DSD research and clinical practice.
  • Continued collaboration is essential for improving DSD diagnosis and predicting outcomes.
  • Focus on specialist multidisciplinary clinics and community engagement will enhance quality of life for individuals with DSD.
