Background:

Effective interdisciplinary communication is crucial for optimal patient care.
Understanding perceptions between orthodontists and general dentists is key to improving collaboration.

Purpose of the Study:

To compare orthodontists' and general dentists' views on their interdisciplinary communication.
To identify similarities and differences in communication perceptions.

Main Methods:

A web-based and mailed survey was distributed to orthodontists (N=137) and general dentists (N=144) in the United States.
Respondents reported on communication media preferences and practices.

Main Results:

Orthodontists used preferred communication media, shifting to two-way methods with increased treatment complexity.
Both groups found communication regarding white spot lesions inadequate.
Orthodontists reported seeking general dentist input more often than general dentists reported.

Conclusions:

General agreement exists on communication media usage, but discrepancies noted in perceived adequacy and input seeking.
Communication strategies should be individualized based on patient-specific needs.
