Understanding aggression is key for public health. This study found that high negative urgency and using suppression for emotion regulation increase aggression, particularly when in a bad mood.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Public Health
- Social Science
Background:
- Interpersonal aggression has significant public health implications.
- Understanding factors contributing to aggression is crucial for developing effective interventions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine the direct and interactive effects of negative urgency and emotion regulation strategies (cognitive reappraisal vs. expressive suppression) on displaced aggression.
- To investigate these relationships under conditions of induced negative mood.
Main Methods:
- 197 undergraduate students participated.
- Participants were randomly assigned to use either cognitive reappraisal or expressive suppression after a negative mood induction.
- An analog displaced aggression task was administered immediately following the mood induction and emotion regulation manipulation.
Main Results:
- A direct, positive association was found between negative urgency and aggression.
- Using expressive suppression was linked to higher levels of aggression compared to using cognitive reappraisal.
- No interactive effects were observed between negative urgency and emotion regulation strategy in predicting aggression.
Conclusions:
- Negative urgency and the use of expressive suppression are potential targets for interventions aimed at reducing aggressive behavior.
- Cognitive reappraisal may be a more adaptive emotion regulation strategy than expressive suppression in mitigating aggression.
