Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms-SNPs01:05

Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms-SNPs

20.3K
A single nucleotide polymorphism or SNP is a single nucleotide variation at a specific genomic position in a large population. It is the most prevalent type of sequence variation found in the human genome. Point mutations that occur in more than 1% of the population qualify as SNPs. These are present once every 1000 nucleotides on an average in the human genome. Replacement of a purine with another purine (A/G) or a pyrimidine with another pyrimidine (C/T) is known as a transition. In contrast,...

Nose and Nasal Cavity01:24

Nose and Nasal Cavity

16.9K
The nose is composed of an observable exterior segment (external nose) and an internal segment within the skull known as the nasal cavity (internal nose). The external nose, visible on the face, consists of a framework of bone and hyaline cartilage enveloped in skin and muscle and lined with a mucous membrane. This structure is supported by the frontal bone, nasal bones, and maxillary bone and is supplemented by a cartilaginous framework comprising the septal nasal cartilage, lateral nasal...

Epistaxis01:30

Epistaxis

801
Epistaxis, or nosebleeds, occurs when small, swollen blood vessels in the nasal mucous membrane rupture. Typically, the anterior septum is the primary site of occurrence.
Etiology
Possible causes of this condition include high blood pressure, trauma, low humidity, upper respiratory tract infections, allergies, foreign bodies, nasal inhalation of corticosteroids or illicit drugs, excessive use of decongestant nasal sprays, facial or nasal surgery, anatomic malformation, tumors, or systemic...

Inheritance

2.0K
Gregor Mendel's pioneering work on the principles of inheritance fundamentally transformed our understanding of how traits are transmitted from generation to generation. His experiments with pea plants laid the groundwork for the discovery of genes, discrete units within organisms that control heredity.
Each gene exists in pairs, and the combination of these genes from both parents forms an individual's genotype. This genotype is a blueprint of potential traits. Examples of genotype...

    Summary

Genetic factors play a significant role in nasal polyp development. This study found that close relatives of individuals with nasal polyps have a nearly five times higher risk, suggesting a strong hereditary component.

    Area of Science:

    • Otolaryngology
    • Genetics
    • Epidemiology

    Background:

    • Nasal polyps are a common condition with poorly understood pathogenesis.
    • The role of genetic predisposition in nasal polyp development requires further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the potential genetic factors contributing to nasal polyp formation.
    • To compare the prevalence of nasal polyps in relatives of patients with the general population.

    Main Methods:

    • Recruitment of patients with nasal polyps and their adult close relatives.
    • Nasal endoscopy performed on recruited relatives.
    • Comparison of polyp prevalence between relatives and a general population sample.

    Main Results:

    • A total of 368 patients and 410 relatives were studied over 4 years.
    • Nasal polyp prevalence within families was calculated at 19.2%.
    • Relatives exhibited an almost fivefold higher relative risk for nasal polyps compared to the general population.

    Conclusions:

    • The findings strongly suggest that heredity is an important factor in the development of nasal polyps.
    • This study provides evidence for a genetic influence on nasal polyp susceptibility.
