Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify risk factors associated with postoperative wound complications in kidney transplant recipients.
  • To evaluate the impact of these wound complications on kidney transplant outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 108 consecutive kidney transplant patients from January 2010 to December 2010.
  • Wound morbidity defined as surgical site infection or symptomatic lymphocele requiring intervention.
  • Review of patient, donor, and surgical characteristics to identify risk factors.

Main Results:

  • Twelve patients experienced wound complications (8 lymphoceles, 5 surgical site infections).
  • Risk factors identified include recipient's age, body mass index, urinary tract infection, and prolonged wound drainage.
  • Wound morbidity did not significantly increase the incidence of delayed graft function, acute rejection, graft failure, or mortality.

Conclusions:

  • Obesity, advanced recipient age, urinary tract infections, and prolonged wound drainage are significant risk factors for wound complications after kidney transplant.
  • Despite increased risk, wound complications do not adversely affect graft and patient survival rates.
