Equilibrium and Balance01:15

Equilibrium and Balance

8.2K
The inner ear assumes dual functionalities of auditory perception and equilibrium maintenance. The vestibule is the organ responsible for balance. This organ contains mechanoreceptors, specifically hair cells, endowed with stereocilia, which aid in deciphering information regarding the position and motion of our heads. Two intrinsic components, the utricle and saccule, help perceive head position, while the semicircular canals track head movement. Neurological messages initiated in the...

Autoimmune Disorders01:29

Autoimmune Disorders

2.3K
Autoimmune diseases are a group of disorders in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own cells, tissues, and organs. This results from an overactive immune response against substances and tissues normally present in the body. Let's delve into the concept and mechanism of autoimmune diseases from an immune system point of view, explore different causes and examples of such diseases, and discuss potential solutions.

The Thyroid Gland01:23

The Thyroid Gland

9.1K
The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck and covers the anterior surface of the trachea. The gland has two lateral lobes connected by a thin tissue mass called the isthmus. Internally, each lobe comprises many small spherical structures known as thyroid follicles, surrounded by a network of blood vessels.
The follicles have a central cavity lined by simple cuboidal to squamous epithelial cells called follicular cells. These cells produce the glycoprotein...

Synthesis and Regulation of Thyroid Hormones

9.5K
Low blood levels of the thyroid hormones — triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) — signal the hypothalamus to release the thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH). TRH then reaches the pituitary gland and stimulates the release of thyroid-stimulating hormone(TSH) into the bloodstream.
Upon reaching the thyroid gland, TSH stimulates the follicular cells' active uptake of iodide ions from the blood. The ions diffuse to the apical surface of the cells and are oxidized to iodine. The...

Functions of Thyroid Hormones

7.1K
The thyroid hormone (TH) plays a pivotal role in the intricate orchestration of physiological processes, exerting profound effects on development, metabolism, and homeostasis throughout different life stages.
TH is indispensable for the normal development and maturation of the skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems during fetal and childhood growth. It facilitates bone mineral turnover and regulates protein synthesis in developing tissues, contributing significantly to overall growth and...

Gastritis-II: Pathophysiology01:17

Gastritis-II: Pathophysiology

1.8K
Gastritis is marked by disruption of the mucosal barrier that usually protects the stomach tissue from digestive juices and manifests in acute and chronic forms.
In acute gastritis, the gastric mucosa becomes swollen and red and undergoes superficial erosion. Superficial ulceration may lead to bleeding.
In chronic gastritis, persistent or repeated insults lead to chronic inflammatory changes and, eventually, thinning or atrophy of the gastric tissue.
Gastritis can stem from various causes, each...

Summary

This study found no link between benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) and thyroid autoimmunity. Further large-scale research is needed to fully understand any potential relationship between BPPV and thyroid conditions.

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Endocrinology
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a common vestibular disorder.
  • The exact etiology of BPPV remains unclear, despite theories like canalolithiasis.
  • Thyroid autoimmunity is a condition involving the immune system attacking thyroid tissues.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the potential relationship between BPPV and thyroid autoimmunity.
  • To evaluate serum levels of thyroid autoantibodies in patients with BPPV.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study involving 50 BPPV patients, 52 non-BPPV vertigo patients, and 60 controls.
  • Cochleovestibular tests and ENT examinations were performed.
  • Serum levels of TSH, TPO-Ab, and TG-Ab were measured.

Main Results:

  • Elevated thyroid antibodies were found in 16% of the BPPV group, 11.5% of the non-BPPV group, and 25% of controls.
  • No statistically significant difference in TG-Ab and TPO-Ab levels was observed between the groups.
  • All subjects had normal TSH values.

Conclusions:

  • This study did not find a correlation between BPPV and thyroid autoimmunity.
  • The findings suggest that thyroid autoimmunity may not be a significant factor in BPPV.
  • Larger studies are recommended to definitively clarify the relationship.
