Physical Assessment of the Respiratory Tract IV: Auscultation01:28

Physical Assessment of the Respiratory Tract IV: Auscultation

3.7K
Auscultation is a crucial component of the physical assessment of the respiratory tract. It offers valuable insights into airflow through the bronchial tree and potential lung obstructions. This process involves careful listening to breath, voice, and adventitious sounds, which can reveal a wealth of information about a patient's respiratory health.
Breath Sounds
Breath sounds are categorized into vesicular, bronchovesicular, and bronchial.

Larynx01:21

Larynx

6.6K
The human larynx, often referred to as the voice box, is an intricate organ located in the neck. It serves as a pathway for air to enter the lungs during respiration and is an essential component of voice production.
Anatomy of the Larynx
The larynx consists of various components, including cartilage, muscles, and vocal cords. Its structure includes three large unpaired cartilages—the thyroid, cricoid, and epiglottis—and three smaller paired cartilages—the arytenoids,...

Respiratory System Abnormal Finding II: Palpation and Auscultation

2.1K
In assessing respiratory abnormalities, palpation and auscultation are critical tools for detecting and interpreting various pathophysiological changes. These techniques provide insight into underlying disorders by evaluating tactile sensations and sounds produced by the respiratory system.
Palpation Findings
During a respiratory assessment, palpation can reveal several vital abnormalities:

Learning Disabilities01:25

Learning Disabilities

757
Learning disabilities are cognitive disorders caused by neurological impairments that affect cognitive functions like language and reading, without indicating overall intellectual or developmental challenges. These disabilities differ from global intellectual or developmental disabilities as they are limited to distinct cognitive functions. Common learning disabilities include dysgraphia, dyslexia, and dyscalculia, each of which impacts unique aspects of learning.

Air-entraining Agents01:27

Air-entraining Agents

368
Air-entraining agents improve the durability and workability of concrete in climates with frequent freezing and thawing. These agents prevent cracks by introducing small air bubbles into the mix, creating spaces accommodating water expansion when temperatures drop. The air-entraining agents lower the surface tension of water, forming stable, small air bubbles. This method is more effective than having accidental large voids, as the intentional, smaller, and evenly distributed air voids improve...

Oppositional Defiant Disorder01:30

Oppositional Defiant Disorder

1.5K
A persistent pattern of angry or irritable mood, defiant behavior, or vindictiveness characterizes Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). Symptoms must occur over at least six months, involve interactions with individuals beyond siblings, and meet specific diagnostic criteria to be clinically significant. The disorder affects emotional regulation, social interactions, and behavior, often manifesting early in life and influencing long-term development and functioning.

Summary

Primary school teachers show a high prevalence of voice disorders, with over half exhibiting abnormalities. However, vocal loading was not directly linked to these findings, highlighting a need for updated legislation.

Area of Science:

  • Occupational Health
  • Laryngology
  • Speech-Language Pathology

Background:

  • Voice disorders are frequently reported in teachers, with vocal loading suspected as a primary cause.
  • Previous studies indicate a high prevalence of voice issues among educators.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of voice disorders in primary school teachers.
  • To investigate potential cofactors contributing to voice disorders in this population.
  • To compare findings with a control group.

Main Methods:

  • A sample of 157 primary school teachers completed questionnaires on clinical data and the Voice Handicap Index (VHI).
  • Participants underwent laryngostroboscopic examination and logopedic evaluation.
  • Results were compared to a control group of accompanying individuals.

Main Results:

  • Teachers showed a significantly higher rate of laryngostroboscopic abnormalities (51.6%) compared to the control group (16%).
  • Vocal fold disorders were not correlated with teaching experience, smoking, coffee intake, or anxiety levels.
  • The prevalence of vocal nodules was 7.1%, lower than reported in some previous studies.

Conclusions:

  • While teachers exhibit a high prevalence of voice disorders, vocal loading was not found to be a significant correlate in this study.
  • Current Italian legislation lacks voice education and screening guidelines for high-risk professions.
  • There is a pressing need for legislative changes to address voice health in teachers.
