Polytobacco use is common among college students, with males, underclassmen, and minorities at higher risk. Emerging products like e-cigarettes and hookah are frequently used in combination with traditional tobacco products.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Addiction Medicine
- Sociology of Health
Background:
- Polytobacco use, defined as using multiple tobacco products, is a growing concern among college students.
- This behavior increases nicotine addiction and associated health risks.
- Understanding patterns and risk factors is crucial for targeted interventions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine polytobacco use patterns in college students who have ever used tobacco.
- To identify sociodemographic and personal factors linked to current polytobacco use versus single product or former use.
Main Methods:
- An online survey was administered to 1593 randomly selected college students (age 18+).
- The study included 662 "ever tobacco users" (41.6% of completers).
- Data collected included tobacco product use, attitudes, and sociodemographic information.
Main Results:
- Approximately 15% of "ever tobacco users" reported current polytobacco use.
- Cigars, little cigars, and clove cigarettes were common in polytobacco use combinations.
- Males, underclassmen, and those accepting of cigarette use were more likely to be polytobacco users.
- White/non-Hispanic students were less likely to engage in polytobacco use compared to single product users.
Conclusions:
- Polytobacco users frequently consumed emerging products like hookah and electronic cigarettes.
- Males, underclassmen, and racial/ethnic minorities face elevated risks for polytobacco use.
- Further research into college student polytobacco use is warranted due to vulnerability to nicotine addiction.
