    Background:

    • Thai monks are an unshod population with a unique lifestyle involving strict rules on barefoot walking and sitting postures.
    • These practices may theoretically increase the risk of developing foot and ankle problems.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the prevalence of common foot and ankle problems in Thai monks.

    Main Methods:

    • A cross-sectional survey and foot/ankle examinations were conducted on monks in northern Thailand.
    • Foot morphology was assessed using the Harris mat footprint method.

    Main Results:

    • Callosity (70.8%) and toe deformities (18.2%) were the most prevalent foot and ankle problems.
    • Prolonged barefoot walking since ordainment was associated with callosity and toe deformities (p < 0.05).
    • Callosity distribution included forefoot (47.3%), lateral malleolus (40.7%), and heel (12%).

    Conclusions:

    • Callosity and toe deformity are the most common foot and ankle problems in Thai monks, particularly those with extended barefoot walking and long-term ordainment.
    • The unique walking and sitting patterns of Thai monks may contribute to these conditions.
