Insights
This study on short gut syndrome in infants found that the Bianchi procedure, which doubles intestinal length, requires careful consideration of parental and child stress. Understanding collective reactions is crucial for surgical timing and patient selection.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Surgery
- Gastroenterology
- Congenital Malformations
Context:
- Focuses on pediatric patients (4-24 months) with short gut syndrome resulting from congenital malformations.
- Examines the Bianchi procedure, a surgical technique to increase intestinal length.
- Highlights the critical pre- and postoperative periods for patient and family well-being.
Purpose:
- To assess the psychological and physical stress experienced by children and their parents undergoing the Bianchi procedure.
- To identify collective reactions to the surgical intervention and its recovery phases.
- To inform optimal timing and indication for the Bianchi procedure in pediatric short gut syndrome.
Summary:
- Six pediatric patients with short gut syndrome underwent the Bianchi procedure between 1985 and 1988.
- The study emphasizes the necessity of interviewing parents to understand the comprehensive stress associated with the surgery.
- Observed collective reactions provide valuable insights for clinical decision-making regarding surgical intervention.
Impact:
- Provides crucial data for improving patient care protocols in pediatric short gut syndrome.
- Informs surgical teams about the importance of psychological support for families undergoing complex gastrointestinal surgery.
- Contributes to a better understanding of the long-term implications of the Bianchi procedure on pediatric patients and their families.
Abstract:
From 1985 to 1988, six patients suffered from short gut syndrome due to congenital malformations. The children were aged 4-24 months at the time of the operation in which the gut was doubled in length by a Bianchi procedure. It is necessary to interview the parents about their own and the child's psychological and physical stress during the pre- and postoperative periods. Collective reactions were found which must be considered for indication and time of operation.
