Mechanical loading significantly enhances tendon healing by improving the structure and attachment strength at the tendon-bone interface. This study highlights the benefits of early movement in recovery.
Area of Science:
- Orthopedic research
- Biomedical engineering
- Regenerative medicine
Background:
- Tendon injuries require effective healing strategies.
- The tendon-bone interface is crucial for functional recovery after repair.
- Understanding the impact of mechanical loading on healing is vital.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the structural integrity and attachment strength of a healing tendon-bone interface.
- To determine the role of mechanical loading in promoting tendon healing.
Main Methods:
- Sixty rabbits underwent Achilles tendon detachment and repair.
- One group was immobilized post-surgery; the other received immediate loading.
- Histological and biomechanical assessments were performed at 4 weeks.
Main Results:
- The loading group exhibited significantly greater ultimate stress (4.598 N/mm²) compared to the control group (3.388 N/mm²).
- Histological analysis revealed a more organized tendon-to-bone interface with increased chondrocyte presence in the loading group.
- These findings were statistically significant (P < 0.05).
Conclusions:
- Mechanical loading positively influences the healing of the tendon-bone interface.
- Early postoperative loading enhances both the structural organization and attachment strength of repaired tendons.
