Hepatitis

63
Hepatitis is an inflammatory condition of the liver most commonly caused by hepatotropic viruses (A–E), though non-infectious causes such as alcohol and drugs also exist.Hepatitis AHepatitis A virus (HAV) is a non-enveloped RNA virus of the Picornaviridae family. It is primarily transmitted via the fecal-oral route, typically through ingestion of contaminated food or water. After ingestion, HAV enters the bloodstream through the oropharynx or intestinal epithelium and reaches the liver.

Area of Science:

  • Virology
  • Hepatology
  • Bioinformatics

Background:

  • Hepatitis Delta Virus (HDV) causes delta hepatitis in humans.
  • Information retrieval for HDV is complex due to scattered data.
  • A comprehensive web resource is needed for HDV research.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce HDVDB, a comprehensive web database for Hepatitis Delta Virus.
  • To consolidate information on HDV, including its genome, pathogenesis, and epidemiology.
  • To provide tools for HDV research, such as siRNA design.

Main Methods:

  • Development of a user-friendly web database (HDVDB).
  • Integration of basic HDV information, sequence data, and bibliographic references.
  • Inclusion of a tool, 'siHDV Predict', for designing siRNA molecules.

Main Results:

  • HDVDB provides annotated information on HDV and delta hepatitis.
  • The database includes sequence data and relevant literature.
  • The 'siHDV Predict' tool aids in developing strategies to control HDV activity.

Conclusions:

  • HDVDB serves as a valuable public domain resource for researchers, scientists, and the pharmaceutical industry.
  • The database simplifies access to essential HDV information.
  • Integrated tools like 'siHDV Predict' support further research and therapeutic development for HDV.
