Summary

Fasting, whether total or partial, does not significantly accelerate gastric emptying in mice. Gastric volume analysis showed no significant difference between food deprivation alone versus food and water deprivation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of different fasting regimens on gastric emptying in a murine model.
  • To quantify changes in gastric volume and contents under fasting conditions.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-eight mice were divided into normal, total fasting (food and water deprivation), and partial fasting (food deprivation only) groups.
  • Fasting groups were euthanized at 24, 48, or 72 hours.
  • Gastric volume, stomach distension, and gastrointestinal food debris were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Mean gastric volume was significantly lower in both total (847 mm3) and partial (997 mm3) fasting groups compared to the normal group (1601 mm3).
  • No significant differences in gastric volume were observed between total and partial fasting groups across all time points (p<0.05).
  • The presence of food debris and degree of stomach distension did not differ significantly between total and partial fasting groups (p>0.05).

Conclusions:

  • Neither total fasting nor partial fasting (solids deprivation) effectively induces gastric emptying in mice.
  • The study suggests that water intake plays a role in maintaining gastric volume during fasting.
