    Background:

    • Collateral circulation develops in two phases: rapid functional enhancement and slow new vessel formation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate whether angiotensin II stimulates new blood vessel formation.
    • To compare the angiogenic potential of angiotensin II with cholecystokinin and polyacrylamide gel.

    Main Methods:

    • Angiotensin II and cholecystokinin were incorporated into slow-release polyacrylamide gel implants.
    • Implants were placed in rabbit corneas to assess neovascularization.
    • New vessel formation was quantified over a 2-3 week period.
