Ultrasonography

8.4K
Ultrasonography is an imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to visualize the body's internal structures. It is a non-invasive and safe procedure that does not involve the use of ionizing radiation, making it widely used in various medical fields. Ultrasonography is used to study heart function, blood flow in the neck or extremities, certain conditions such as gallbladder disease, and fetal growth and development.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Radiology
  • Breast Imaging

Background:

  • Automated breast sonography (ABS) is an emerging tool for breast cancer detection.
  • Patient comfort and scan efficiency are key considerations for ABS implementation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the technical feasibility of gel pad application in ABS.
  • To assess the impact of gel pad use on patient-reported pain during ABS.
  • To determine the effects of gel pad application on scan coverage and image quality in ABS.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty patients undergoing ABS were included in the study.
  • Each patient received two sets of ABS: one with and one without a gel pad.
  • Patient-reported pain was collected via feedback.
  • Scan coverage and image quality were quantitatively and qualitatively assessed.

Main Results:

  • Gel pad application resulted in a statistically significant decrease in examination-related pain (P < .0001).
  • Scan coverage was notably expanded, particularly in the mid-portion of the breast.
  • Image quality remained satisfactory and showed no significant differences between the two examination sets.

Conclusions:

  • Gel pad application is a simple and effective technique for enhancing patient comfort during ABS.
  • The use of gel pads in ABS improves scan coverage without adversely affecting diagnostic image quality.
  • This method offers a practical solution for increasing patient acceptance and potentially the utility of ABS.
