Area of Science:

  • Clinical Psychology
  • Sports Medicine
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a prevalent mental health condition.
  • Effective treatment strategies for MDD are continuously being researched.
  • Physical activity (PA) has shown promise as a therapeutic intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify the optimal type and dosage of physical activity for treating MDD.
  • To provide evidence-based guidelines for clinicians managing MDD patients.
  • To synthesize findings from high-quality research on PA and MDD.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic overview of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published after 1990.
  • Searched PsycINFO, Medline, PubMed, and Scopus databases up to April 2014.
  • Included studies with detailed PA parameters and confirmed MDD diagnoses (DSM-IV/ICD-10).

Main Results:

  • Twelve rigorous studies met the stringent inclusion criteria.
  • Analysis focused on aerobic and anaerobic physical activity interventions.
  • Quality assessment was performed by two independent reviewers.

Conclusions:

  • Personalized physical activity interventions are recommended for MDD treatment.
  • Recommended PA: at least 30 minutes, three times per week, preferably supervised.
  • These recommendations should be considered within the context of limited available studies.
