Color perception begins in the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. Two main theories explain how colors are seen: the trichromatic theory and the opponent-process theory. The trichromatic theory, proposed by Thomas Young in 1802 and extended by Hermann von Helmholtz in 1852, suggests that color vision is based on three types of cone receptors in the retina. These cones are sensitive to different but overlapping ranges of wavelengths corresponding to red, blue, and green.

Summary

A rare case of stroke affecting the corpus callosum caused transient visual hallucinations in a 71-year-old woman. This is the first reported instance of such a symptom following a callosal stroke.

  • Symptoms were often triggered by eye closure or darkness.

Findings:

  • Neurologic examination, including cognitive and visual assessments, was normal.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a small stroke in the right inferior forceps major of the corpus callosum.
  • Visual hallucinations resolved spontaneously within two days of admission.

Implications:

  • This case represents the first documented instance of transient visual hallucinations secondary to a corpus callosum stroke.
  • Highlights the diverse and uncommon presentations of cerebrovascular events.
  • Suggests considering callosal stroke in the differential diagnosis of visual disturbances.
