Epistaxis01:30

Epistaxis

794
Epistaxis, or nosebleeds, occurs when small, swollen blood vessels in the nasal mucous membrane rupture. Typically, the anterior septum is the primary site of occurrence.
Etiology
Possible causes of this condition include high blood pressure, trauma, low humidity, upper respiratory tract infections, allergies, foreign bodies, nasal inhalation of corticosteroids or illicit drugs, excessive use of decongestant nasal sprays, facial or nasal surgery, anatomic malformation, tumors, or systemic...

Summary

Late-onset blepharoplasty hemorrhage is rare but can occur days after surgery, often linked to uncontrolled high blood pressure. Patients need counseling on managing systemic conditions post-operation.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Plastic Surgery

Background:

  • Periocular and orbital hemorrhage are rare post-blepharoplasty complications, with an incidence of 0.055%.
  • Delayed hemorrhage occurring more than 48 hours after surgery is exceptionally uncommon.

Observation:

  • Two cases of delayed postoperative hemorrhage are presented, occurring 5 and 8 days after uncomplicated upper blepharoplasty.
  • Uncontrolled hypertension was identified as the likely initiating factor in both cases.

Findings:

  • These cases highlight the potential for late-onset bleeding following blepharoplasty.
  • Systemic factors, particularly hypertension, can significantly influence postoperative outcomes.

Implications:

  • Patients undergoing blepharoplasty require thorough counseling regarding the postoperative management of their systemic conditions.
  • Physicians should maintain a high index of suspicion for delayed hemorrhage in patients with uncontrolled hypertension post-blepharoplasty.
