Paths with more turns are perceived as longer: misperceptions with map-based and abstracted path stimuli

People overestimate distances on routes with more turns, a phenomenon known as the route-angularity effect. This effect occurs even without spatial context and is more pronounced in individuals with a lower sense of direction.
