    Background:

    • Previous research indicated apraxic patients with posterior infarctions involving the parietal lobe had difficulty discriminating between gestures.
    • This study aimed to replicate and extend these findings by investigating gesture comprehension rather than discrimination.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the ability of apraxic patients to comprehend the meaning of pantomimed actions.
    • To compare the gesture comprehension performance of apraxic-aphasic patients, nonapraxic-aphasic patients, and normal subjects.

    Main Methods:

    • A nonverbal paradigm was employed using videotaped pantomimed actions.
    • Participants viewed pantomimes and selected a matching drawing from four options (one correct, three foils).
    • Subjects included six apraxic-aphasic patients, seven nonapraxic-aphasic patients, and six healthy controls.

    • Apraxic patients made significantly more errors in comprehending the pantomimed actions compared to nonapraxic-aphasic patients and normal subjects.
    • Performance differences highlight specific deficits in gesture comprehension associated with apraxia.

    Conclusions:

    • The findings support the role of the parietal lobe in processing the meaning of gestures.
    • Apraxia, particularly when associated with parietal lobe lesions, impairs the comprehension of meaningful, non-verbal actions.
