A typical somatosensory pathway includes three types of long neurons: primary, secondary, and tertiary.     Background:

    • Children with pervasive developmental disorder (PDD) often exhibit sensory hypersensitivity (SH).
    • Previous research suggests a link between SH and anxiety or depression, but often with methodological limitations.
    • Limited studies have examined SH in high-functioning PDD (HFPDD) without co-occurring intellectual disability.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the prevalence of SH in children with HFPDD.
    • To investigate the correlation between SH and various characteristics, including broadband psychopathology.
    • To explore the relationship between SH, anxiety, and depression in this population.

    Main Methods:

    • 132 children diagnosed with HFPDD (ages 6-15) were assessed.
    • Participants were categorized into sensory hypersensitivity (HS) and non-hypersensitivity (non-HS) groups.
    • Logistic regression analyzed correlations between SH, demographics, PDD subtypes, socioeconomic status, and psychopathology.

    Main Results:

    • A significant majority (65.9%) of children with HFPDD presented with sensory hypersensitivity.
    • Auditory hypersensitivity was the most frequently reported type.
    • SH in HFPDD was significantly associated with autistic disorder and symptoms of anxiety and depression.

    Conclusions:

    • Sensory hypersensitivity is highly prevalent in children with HFPDD.
    • SH may be a core characteristic of HFPDD, potentially linked to anxiety and depression.
    • Aggressive assessment of SH in children with PDD is recommended.
