Video-assisted endoscopy for transaxillary breast augmentation significantly increases operative time without improving safety or aesthetic results. This technique offers no added benefit over the standard non-endoscopic approach for breast augmentation.
Area of Science:
- Plastic Surgery
- Surgical Techniques
- Cosmetic Procedures
Background:
- Transaxillary breast augmentation offers scarless results on the breasts, preserving breast tissue and ducts.
- The effectiveness of video-assisted endoscopy in this procedure is not well-established.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare the outcomes of transaxillary breast augmentation with and without video-assisted endoscopy.
Main Methods:
- A prospective, randomized study of 34 women undergoing transaxillary breast augmentation with or without video-assisted endoscopy.
- Patients received silicone implants in the subglandular plane and were followed for 25 months.
- Evaluated parameters included operative time, complications, pain, satisfaction, and aesthetics.
Main Results:
- Procedures using video-assisted endoscopy were significantly longer than non-endoscopic procedures.
- No significant differences were observed in complication rates, postoperative pain, or patient satisfaction.
Conclusions:
- Video-assisted endoscopy prolongs operative time for transaxillary breast augmentation.
- The use of video-assisted endoscopy does not enhance safety or aesthetic outcomes in this procedure.
