  • Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) on 27 female BPD patients and 26 female healthy controls (HC).
  • A differential delay aversive conditioning paradigm using electric shock (unconditioned stimulus) and visual stimuli (conditioned stimuli: CS+, CS-).
  • Measured blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) response, skin conductance response (SCR), and subjective ratings (valence, arousal).

Main Results:

  • No significant group differences in overall brain activation.
  • BPD patients showed increased insula activity during early acquisition (CS+ vs. CS-).
  • During extinction, BPD patients reported higher arousal/aversiveness and showed amygdala activation to CS+; HC showed prefrontal activation.
  • HC exhibited amygdala habituation to CS+ during acquisition, unlike BPD patients.

Conclusions:

  • BPD is associated with altered temporal response patterns in emotional learning.
  • Individuals with BPD demonstrate heightened vigilance early in acquisition and delayed extinction processes.
  • Findings suggest distinct neural processing of aversive stimuli in BPD, particularly involving the amygdala and insula.
