    Background:

    • The link between multiple sclerosis (MS) and anemia requires further clarification.
    • Previous research has not sufficiently established the relationship between these two conditions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the prevalence of anemia in MS patients compared to controls.
    • To investigate associations between MS patient characteristics and anemia.
    • To assess the impact of anemia on the risk of developing MS.

    Main Methods:

    • A retrospective, cross-sectional, case-control study.
    • Included 187 consecutive MS patients and 200 age- and sex-matched controls.
    • Anemia defined as hemoglobin <12 g/dL (females) or <13 g/dL (males).

    Main Results:

    • Anemia prevalence was significantly higher in MS patients (18.7%) versus controls (9.5%).
    • No association found between MS patient characteristics (demographic, clinical, drug-related) and anemia.
    • Anemia occurrence more than doubled the risk of developing MS (OR: 2.19, 95% CI: 1.19-4.0).

    Conclusions:

    • A consistent association exists between anemia and multiple sclerosis.
    • Anemia may be a risk factor for developing MS.
