A study of psychiatrically normal children in a hospital based child guidance clinic
Insights
Many children attending child guidance clinics are psychiatrically normal. Proper assessment is crucial to avoid mislabeling and unnecessary treatment for conditions like epilepsy or scholastic backwardness.
Area of Science:
- Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
- Developmental Psychology
Background:
- Child guidance clinics (CGCs) serve children with behavioral and emotional concerns.
- Accurate diagnosis is essential to prevent misattribution of normal developmental variations or specific conditions as psychiatric disorders.
Purpose of the Study:
- To retrospectively analyze the psychiatric status of children referred to a hospital-based CGC.
- To identify the prevalence of psychiatrically normal children within the clinic's patient population.
- To highlight the importance of precise assessment in pediatric mental health evaluations.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective chart review of 1330 children attending a hospital-based CGC over three years.
- Categorization of children based on psychiatric diagnosis and presenting concerns.
- Statistical analysis to determine the proportion of children without psychiatric disorders.
Main Results:
- 7.37% of the 1330 children studied were found to have no psychiatric disorder.
- Epilepsy and scholastic backwardness, in the absence of psychiatric disorders, accounted for 70.41% of this psychiatrically normal group.
- A significant proportion of referred children did not present with a psychiatric condition.
Conclusions:
- Children referred to CGCs require thorough assessment to differentiate psychiatric conditions from other developmental or neurological issues.
- Misdiagnosis can lead to inappropriate labeling and treatment of psychiatrically healthy children.
- Emphasizes the need for refined diagnostic protocols in child mental health services.
Abstract:
A total of 1330 children who attended a hospital-based child guidance clinic in last three years were studied retrospectively. 7.37% of these were found to have no psychiatric disorder. Epilepsy and scholastic backwardness without any psychiatric disorder, together constituted 70.41% of this group. Children referred to a child guidance clinic require proper assessment to detect psychiatrically normal children who would otherwise receive unnecessary label of psychiatric disorder and treatment.
