Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if and how task contexts modulate early retrieval of psycholinguistic information.
  • To determine the timing and location of these task modulations.
  • To differentiate between task-dependent and task-independent processing stages.

Main Methods:

  • Electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) recordings were used.
  • A parametric approach analyzed spatiotemporal response patterns in the occipitotemporal cortex.
  • Orthographic, lexical, and semantic variables were examined across three tasks: silent reading, lexical decision, and semantic decision.

Main Results:

  • Task modulation of word frequency and imageability effects occurred around 160 msec in ventral occipitotemporal regions.
  • Task effects on orthographic typicality were observed earlier, around 100 msec.
  • Later, task-independent effects for frequency and typicality were found in anterior temporal lobes after 200 msec.

Conclusions:

  • Occipitotemporal areas integrate perceptual input with prior knowledge in a task-dependent manner.
  • Early processing stages of visual word recognition are influenced by task demands.
  • Later stages involve task-independent retrieval of semantic information, suggesting word recognition is flexible.
