Summary

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) patients show increased mean platelet volume (MPV), a marker of platelet activation. This elevation in MPV is independently linked to higher total cholesterol levels in FH patients.

Background:

  • FH significantly elevates the risk of early-onset cardiovascular diseases.
  • Platelet activation in FH patients is suspected but not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate mean platelet volume (MPV) as a marker of platelet activation in patients with FH.
  • To compare MPV levels between FH patients and matched controls.
  • To determine the association between MPV and clinical parameters in FH.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study involving 164 patients with FH and 160 controls.
  • Controls were matched for age, gender, hypertension, and smoking status.
  • MPV and platelet count were measured; linear regression analysis was performed.

  • MPV was significantly higher in FH patients (9.2 ± 0.4 fL) compared to controls (7.9 ± 0.6 fL) (P < .001).

  • MPV showed an independent association with total cholesterol levels (β = .6, P < .001).

Conclusions:

  • Mean platelet volume (MPV) is elevated in patients with Familial hypercholesterolemia.
  • Increased MPV in FH is independently associated with total cholesterol levels.
  • MPV may serve as a potential indicator of platelet activation and cardiovascular risk in FH.
