Colletotrichum coccodes, a rare fungal pathogen, caused keratitis in an immunocompetent patient without prior trauma. Successful treatment involved ocular Amphotericin B, highlighting a new clinical presentation for this emerging fungus.
Area of Science:
- Medical Mycology
- Infectious Diseases
Background:
- Colletotrichum species are known plant pathogens and rare causes of human infections.
- These fungi typically cause cutaneous phaeohyphomycosis and keratitis in immunocompromised individuals or after tissue trauma.
Observation:
- This report details a case of keratitis caused by Colletotrichum coccodes.
- The patient was a middle-aged, immunocompetent individual with no history of trauma or other predisposing conditions.
Findings:
- The Colletotrichum coccodes isolate demonstrated sensitivity to Amphotericin B and Voriconazole.
- Successful treatment was achieved through ocular administration of Amphotericin B.
Implications:
- This case expands the known clinical spectrum of Colletotrichum coccodes infections.
- It suggests that Colletotrichum infections can occur in immunocompetent individuals without apparent risk factors.
- Highlights the importance of considering this emerging pathogen in unexplained keratitis cases.
