[Ultrastructure of myocardial capillaries in chronic ischemic heart disease]
Insights
Coronary heart disease features abundant myocardial capillaries with narrowed lumens. These capillaries, though narrowed, maintain normal ultrastructure and can adequately supply blood to heart muscle cells after bypass surgery.
Area of Science:
- Cardiovascular Science
- Histopathology
- Microcirculation Research
Context:
- Coronary heart disease (CHD) significantly impacts myocardial perfusion.
- Understanding the structural integrity of myocardial capillaries is crucial for assessing blood supply.
- Previous studies have not fully elucidated the ultrastructural characteristics of narrowed capillaries in CHD.
Purpose:
- To investigate the ultrastructure of myocardial capillaries in patients with coronary heart disease.
- To quantitatively analyze the structural differences between narrowed and open myocardial capillaries.
- To determine the functional potential of narrowed capillaries in the context of myocardial revascularization.
Summary:
- Analysis of intraoperative myocardial biopsy specimens from 50 CHD patients revealed abundant capillaries with narrowed lumens.
- Quantitative stereological analysis showed no substantial ultrastructural differences between narrowed and open capillaries.
- Narrowed myocardial capillaries in CHD patients retain normal ultrastructure and reserve capacity.
Impact:
- Findings suggest narrowed capillaries in CHD are not pathological but represent a functional reserve.
- This reserve capacity is critical for ensuring adequate cardiomyocyte blood supply post-aortocoronary bypass surgery.
- Provides new insights into myocardial microcirculation and potential therapeutic targets in CHD.
Abstract:
Intraoperative myocardial biopsy specimens taken from 50 patients with coronary heart disease were studied to examine ultrastructure of myocardial capillaries. It was found that this disease was characterized by abundant myocardial capillaries with a narrowed lumen. Quantitative stereological analysis indicated that the ultrastructure of the capillaries with narrowed lumen was not substantially different from that of open capillaries. The findings showed that the narrowed capillaries to be reserve and capable of providing an adequate blood supply of cardiomyocytes after aortocoronary bypass surgery.
