Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

1.2K
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

The Neurobehavioral Symptom Inventory (NSI) is widely used but its demographic impact was unknown. Age and gender, not ethnicity, significantly affect NSI symptom reporting, suggesting potential for improved norms.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychology
  • Healthcare Analytics

Background:

  • The Neurobehavioral Symptom Inventory (NSI) is routinely used across diverse populations in large healthcare systems.
  • Investigating demographic influences on NSI symptom reporting is crucial for tool effectiveness.
  • Developing demographically-based norms could enhance NSI application.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the impact of demographic variables (gender, ethnicity, age, education) on Neurobehavioral Symptom Inventory (NSI) scores.
  • To establish normative data for the NSI across diverse community-dwelling individuals.
  • To test the hypothesis that ethnic/cultural background influences NSI scores.

Main Methods:

  • Collected a large dataset of normal community-dwelling individuals using the NSI.
  • Ensured representation from diverse ethnic backgrounds.
  • Utilized analysis of variance (ANOVA) to assess demographic effects on NSI scores.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in NSI scores were found based on ethnic/cultural background.
  • Age and gender were identified as significant contributors to variance in symptom endorsement on the NSI.
  • The NSI demonstrated reliability as a measure of self-reported postconcussive symptoms.

Conclusions:

  • The NSI is a reliable measure for self-reported postconcussive symptoms.
  • Age is a key demographic variable influencing symptom reporting on the NSI.
  • Further research is needed to determine the sensitivity and specificity of the NSI.
