Fixed drug eruptions with modafinil.

Summary

Modafinil, used for sleep disorders, can cause fixed drug eruptions (FDE), a recurring skin reaction. This report details two new cases, highlighting potential misuse and the need for stricter controls on this stimulant medication.

Background:

Modafinil is a psychostimulant approved for narcolepsy, shift work sleep disorder, and obstructive sleep apnea.
It is increasingly used off-label as a lifestyle drug and misused as an over-the-counter medication in India.
Cutaneous side effects of modafinil are known, with fixed drug eruption (FDE) being a specific reaction pattern.
