The formation of teeth, also known as odontogenesis, is a complex process that begins in utero, around the sixth week of embryonic development. There are three stages to this process: the bud stage, the cap stage, and the bell stage.

Background:

  • Dental enamel erosion compromises bracket bond strength in orthodontic patients.
  • Fluoride dentifrices are commonly used for caries prevention, but their effect on bracket adhesion under erosive conditions requires investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of high fluoride dentifrice in maintaining bracket bond strength on enamel after an erosive challenge.
  • To compare the effects of regular and high fluoride dentifrices against acid challenges of varying durations.

Main Methods:

  • Eighty-four enamel specimens were divided into seven groups, subjected to 3 or 6 cycles of acid challenge.
  • Groups were treated with either distilled water, regular fluoride dentifrice (1450 ppm F(-)), or high fluoride dentifrice (5000 ppm F(-)).
  • Bracket bond strength was assessed using a bond strength test after the erosive challenge.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in bond strength was observed among groups after 3 cycles of acid challenge.
  • A statistically significant difference was found between regular and high fluoride dentifrices after 6 cycles of acid challenge (p < 0.05).
  • High fluoride dentifrice (5000 ppm F(-)) prevented the reduction in bracket bond strength observed in the regular fluoride group after 6 acid cycles.

Conclusions:

  • High fluoride toothpaste effectively preserves bracket bond strength on enamel exposed to erosive challenges.
  • The findings suggest that high fluoride dentifrices can be beneficial in orthodontic patients experiencing enamel erosion.
