Conclusions:

  • Context memory retrieval accuracy decreases with age, beginning in midlife.
  • Neural activity patterns during memory retrieval shift in middle age, with increased reliance on ventral occipito-temporal and PFC regions.
  • Changes in PFC contributions to context memory are evident at midlife, suggesting adaptive or compensatory mechanisms.
