Summary
Retroperitoneal liposarcoma (RPLS) in pregnancy is rare. Surgical resection with fetal preservation is feasible in the second trimester, leading to successful outcomes.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Surgical Oncology
- Obstetrics & Gynecology
Background:
- Retroperitoneal liposarcoma (RPLS) typically affects individuals aged 40-70, with a higher incidence in males.
- RPLS during pregnancy presents unique surgical and management challenges due to its rarity.
Observation:
- A 27-year-old pregnant woman was incidentally diagnosed with a large retroperitoneal tumor at 16 weeks gestation.
- The tumor was identified during routine obstetric examination.
Findings:
- En bloc resection of the low-grade myxoid liposarcoma was successfully performed at 20 weeks gestation, preserving the fetus.
- The patient experienced an uneventful pregnancy with a full-term delivery.
- Post-operative imaging at 6 months showed no evidence of local recurrence.
Implications:
- Multidisciplinary collaboration enables successful surgical management of RPLS in pregnant patients.
- En bloc resection with fetal preservation is a viable option in the late second trimester.
- This case highlights the possibility of achieving favorable maternal and fetal outcomes despite rare oncological challenges during pregnancy.
