Summary

This study tracked 6,639 deliveries, finding low rates of puerperal fever (1.1% during, 2.0% post-delivery) and neonatal infections (0.5%). Chlorhexidine emulsion is recommended for obstetric examinations to enhance safety.

Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Infectious Disease Prevention

Background:

  • Puerperal fever and neonatal infections are significant postpartum complications.
  • Vaginal examinations are standard in modern obstetrics.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the incidence of puerperal fever and neonatal infections in a large cohort.
  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of antiseptic lubricants in obstetric examinations.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 6,639 consecutive deliveries.
  • Documentation of febrile temperatures during and after delivery.
  • Recording of neonatal infection rates.
  • Discussion of vaginal versus rectal examination techniques.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Febrile temperatures occurred in 1.1% of patients intrapartum and 2.0% postpartum.
  • Subfebrile temperatures were observed in 7.0% within 7 days postpartum.
  • Neonatal infections were recorded in 0.5% of cases.

Conclusions:

  • The incidence of puerperal fever and neonatal infections in this cohort was low.
  • The use of a chlorhexidine-based antiseptic gliding emulsion is recommended for obstetric examinations to potentially reduce infection risk.
