Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) can be estimated from serum creatinine using the modification of diet in renal disease (MDRD) formula or the chronic kidney disease–epidemiology collaboration (CKD–EPI) equation. Both methods are widely used in clinical practice to assess kidney function and guide treatment decisions.The MDRD equation does not require weight or height measurements and is normalized to the body surface area of 1.73 m², considered the average adult surface area.

Summary

Measles can cause acute kidney injury in adults, a rare complication. This study found that serum creatinine should be checked in all adult measles patients to detect potential renal dysfunction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the occurrence and characteristics of renal dysfunction in adult measles patients during a 2008 epidemic in France.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of hospitalized, biologically confirmed measles cases (January-December 2011).
  • Renal function assessed using the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) equation.

Main Results:

  • 38 adult patients were included; 17 (45%) had a glomerular filtration rate below 90 mL/min.
  • One patient experienced acute renal failure (GFR 37 mL/min) with proteinuria (2.8 g/L), recovering within 2 days.

Conclusions:

  • Acute renal failure is a potential complication of measles in adults.
  • Systematic assessment of serum creatinine is recommended for adult measles patients.
