Background:

  • Traditional postgraduate surgical training may not adequately prepare residents for complex clinical demands.
  • A need exists for structured curricula focused on measurable competencies in surgical education.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of a competency-based education (CBE) curriculum in enhancing postgraduate surgical residents' skills.
  • To compare the outcomes of CBE with traditional training methods.

Main Methods:

  • A comparative study involving postgraduate surgical students (n=16 pre-CBE, n=17 post-CBE).
  • Development of a curriculum chart based on 5 core competencies: patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning, interpersonal skills, and professionalism.
  • Implementation of specific improvement measures within the CBE group.

Main Results:

  • The CBE group demonstrated significantly improved comprehensive competencies compared to the traditional group (P < .05).
  • A 360° assessment method confirmed significant enhancements in all 5 assessed competencies.
  • Overall comprehensive assessment scores were significantly higher in the CBE cohort.

Conclusions:

  • Competency-based education/curriculum development is an effective strategy for improving postgraduate surgical residents' overall competencies.
