This study integrates geographic information system (GIS) and multiple criteria decision analysis (MCDA) for municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill siting. The combined approach effectively identifies and ranks suitable landfill locations, improving waste management strategies.
Area of Science:
- Environmental Engineering
- Geographic Information Science
- Operations Research
Background:
- Municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill siting is a complex environmental challenge requiring the integration of diverse factors.
- Traditional methods often struggle to comprehensively analyze the multitude of criteria involved in optimal landfill selection.
- Effective landfill siting is crucial for sustainable waste management and minimizing environmental impact.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and validate an integrated methodology for municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill siting.
- To combine Geographic Information System (GIS) with advanced Multiple Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) techniques for enhanced site selection.
- To identify and rank optimal locations for MSW disposal facilities.
Main Methods:
- Preparation of 16 input data layers within a GIS environment.
- Elimination of exclusionary lands to identify potentially suitable areas for MSW disposal.
- Application of Preference Ranking Organization Method for Enrichment Evaluations (PROMETHEE) II for ranking and Analytic Network Process (ANP) for criteria weighting.
Main Results:
- Potentially suitable areas for MSW landfilling were identified and ranked using PROMETHEE II and ANP.
- Land suitability was graded on a scale of 1-5, indicating least to most suitable areas.
- Three optimal MSW landfill sites were selected from 15 candidates based on local conditions and the developed suitability model.
Conclusions:
- The integrated GIS-MCDA approach, utilizing PROMETHEE II and ANP, provides an effective and robust method for MSW landfill siting.
- The raster-based methodology demonstrates high efficacy in identifying suitable land for waste disposal.
- This research offers a valuable framework for improving decision-making processes in municipal solid waste management.
