A young man experienced prolonged ventricular tachycardia, leading to persistent ST-T wave changes on ECG for over 40 days. These changes resolved without evidence of underlying heart disease after a 5-year follow-up.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiology
    • Electrophysiology

    Background:

    • Ventricular tachycardia (VT) is a potentially life-threatening arrhythmia.
    • Persistent electrocardiogram (ECG) abnormalities following VT can indicate underlying cardiac pathology.

    Observation:

    • A case of a young, apparently healthy male presenting with sustained ventricular tachycardia (VT) requiring cardioversion.
    • Serial ECGs revealed persistent ST-T wave changes for over 40 days post-cardioversion.

    Findings:

    • Cardiac catheterization and clinical evaluation over 5 years showed no evidence of structural heart disease.
    • The persistent ST-T wave changes were attributed to the prior tachyarrhythmia itself.

    Implications:

    • This case highlights that persistent ECG abnormalities after VT may not always signify underlying heart disease.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • It suggests a need for careful clinical correlation and prolonged follow-up in select cases of VT.
