    Summary

Large cell lymphocytoma, a type of cutaneous lymphocytic infiltrate, typically presents as skin nodules. This study found it has a benign clinical course with no systemic involvement in most patients.

    Area of Science:

    • Dermatopathology
    • Oncology
    • Immunology

    Background:

    • Large cell lymphocytoma (LCL) is a cutaneous lymphocytic infiltrate.
    • Histologically, LCL features dermal aggregates of large lymphoid cells with nuclear atypia, often misdiagnosed as cutaneous lymphoma or reticulum cell sarcoma.
    • Clinical presentation involves solitary or grouped nodules on the trunk, head, and neck.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To characterize the clinical and histological features of large cell lymphocytoma.
    • To evaluate the clinical course and prognosis of patients diagnosed with LCL.
    • To differentiate LCL from malignant cutaneous lymphomas.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 14 patients with LCL.
    • Histopathological examination of skin biopsies.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Monoclonal antibody studies on paraffin-embedded sections.
  • Long-term clinical follow-up (4-31 years).
  • Main Results:

    • All 14 patients presented with skin nodules; 13 are alive and well with no evidence of systemic disease.
    • One patient died from unrelated causes (renal failure and pneumonia).
    • Monoclonal antibody studies confirmed the presence of both B and T cell lineages within LCL.

    Conclusions:

    • Large cell lymphocytoma is a distinct clinicopathological entity with characteristic features.
    • LCL follows a benign clinical course, differentiating it from malignant cutaneous lymphomas.
    • Accurate recognition of LCL is crucial for appropriate patient management and prognosis.
