Aphthous ulcers responding to etretinate--a case report.

G M Murphy, W A Griffiths

    Clinical and Experimental Dermatology
    |July 1, 1989

    Summary

Recurrent aphthous ulcers, often hard to treat, showed repeated remission in a patient taking etretinate for psoriasis. This suggests retinoids may warrant further study for severe aphthous ulcers in select individuals.

    Area of Science:

    • Dermatology
    • Oral Medicine

    Background:

    • Recurrent aphthous ulceration (RAU) presents a significant clinical challenge.
    • Limited effective therapeutic options exist for severe or refractory RAU.

    Observation:

    • A female patient with severe RAU experienced repeated remission.
    • Remission occurred during treatment with etretinate for plantar pustular psoriasis.

    Findings:

    • Etretinate, a systemic retinoid, demonstrated efficacy in managing severe RAU.
    • This case highlights a potential therapeutic role for retinoids in refractory aphthosis.

    Implications:

    • Systemic retinoids, despite teratogenicity concerns, may be considered for severe RAU in carefully selected patients.
    • Further clinical investigation into retinoid therapy for severe aphthosis is warranted.
