Elevated copeptin levels indicate obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) severity and predict cardiovascular risks. This biomarker aids in identifying OSAS patients needing closer monitoring for potential complications.
Area of Science:
- Endocrinology
- Sleep Medicine
- Cardiovascular Research
Background:
- Copeptin, a biomarker derived from antidiuretic hormone, is elevated in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.
- Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is linked to increased risks of coronary and cerebral atherosclerotic diseases.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate copeptin levels in OSAS patients versus controls.
- To determine if copeptin can predict OSAS severity and associated complications.
Main Methods:
- 116 OSAS patients and 27 controls underwent polysomnography.
- Blood samples were analyzed for copeptin using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.
Main Results:
- OSAS patients exhibited significantly higher copeptin levels than controls (P=0.004).
- Higher copeptin levels correlated with increased apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), desaturation index, arousal index, and CRP.
- Copeptin was identified as a predictor of severe OSAS (HR: 1.58, P=0.016).
Conclusions:
- Copeptin levels are elevated in OSAS patients.
- Copeptin may serve as a marker for early cardiovascular complications in OSAS.
- Copeptin shows 84% sensitivity in identifying severe OSAS patients at high cardiovascular risk.
