Summary

This study found no significant differences in pressure resistance or tensile strength among various surgical staplers used for gastrointestinal anastomosis. These findings suggest minor device variations may not be primary factors in anastomotic leak (AL) development.

Background:

  • Anastomotic leak (AL) is a serious complication following gastrointestinal surgery.
  • Surgical staplers are commonly used for gastrointestinal anastomosis, requiring specific performance characteristics.
  • Evaluating the mechanical properties of different staplers is crucial for surgical safety.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the pressure resistance and tensile strength of anastomosis created with different surgical linear staplers.
  • To assess if variations in stapler design impact the integrity of gastrointestinal anastomoses.

Main Methods:

  • Fifty anastomosis were created for each of three different linear staplers (total 150) using fresh pig intestine.
  • Anastomoses were tested for pressure resistance by saline injection until leakage.
  • Tensile strength was evaluated by measuring the force required to open 350 anastomosis created on Tyvek material.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant differences were observed in the mean pressure required to induce an anastomotic leak across the tested staplers (P > 0.05).
