    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Medical Research

    Background:

    • Cancer patients undergoing immunosuppressive therapies are at increased risk for opportunistic infections.
    • Tuberculosis (TB) is a significant global health concern, particularly in immunocompromised populations.

    Observation:

    • A retrospective study identified 4 cases (0.19%) of active tuberculosis among 2,143 cancer patients over six years.
    • The affected patients had diagnoses including non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, breast cancer, chronic myelogenous leukemia, and astrocytoma.

    Findings:

    • Three out of four patients with cancer and TB responded successfully to antitubercular therapy.
    • One patient with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and TB experienced a fatal outcome despite treatment.

    Implications:

    • The study highlights the critical association between TB and neoplasia, emphasizing the need for vigilance.
    • Early diagnosis and prompt management of tuberculosis are essential for improving survival rates in cancer patients.
