Sign Test for Median of Single Population01:20

Sign Test for Median of Single Population

437
In general, the sign test serves as a nonparametric method to test hypotheses about the median of a single population when the data does not follow a known distribution. This simplicity makes it particularly useful for small sample sizes or when the assumptions of parametric tests cannot be met. The process begins with identifying a null hypothesis, typically stating that the population median equals a specific value. The alternative hypothesis could be that the median is either not equal to,...

Estimating Population Standard Deviation01:26

Estimating Population Standard Deviation

3.5K
When the population standard deviation is unknown and the sample size is large, the sample standard deviation s is commonly used as a point estimate of σ. However, it can sometimes under or overestimate the population standard deviation. To overcome this drawback, confidence intervals are determined to estimate population parameters and eliminate any calculation bias accurately. However, this only applies to random samples from normally distributed populations. Knowing the sample mean and...

Language Development01:22

Language Development

1.1K
Children master language quickly and with relative ease, supported by both biological predisposition and reinforcement. B. F. Skinner (1957) proposed that language is learned through reinforcement, while Noam Chomsky (1965) argued that language acquisition mechanisms are biologically determined.
The critical period for language acquisition suggests that the ability to acquire language is at its peak early in life. As people age, this proficiency decreases. Language development begins very...

Spanning Openings in Brick Walls01:20

Spanning Openings in Brick Walls

647
In brick wall construction, supporting structures are crucial for openings like windows and doors to maintain the integrity and support the weight of the wall above. These supports include lintels, corbels, and arches, each serving specific structural purposes.
Lintels are primary supports used to span openings and can be crafted from materials such as reinforced concrete, steel-reinforced brick masonry, or simple steel angles. These are straightforward to install and are typically concealed...

Longitudinal Studies01:26

Longitudinal Studies

692
Longitudinal studies are also widely used in other medical and social science fields. For instance, in cardiovascular research, they can monitor patients' health over decades to identify risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol or smoking, and evaluate the long-term effectiveness of preventive measures. Similarly, in mental health studies, researchers might follow individuals from adolescence into adulthood to understand the development and progression of conditions like...

Estimating Population Mean with Known Standard Deviation01:16

Estimating Population Mean with Known Standard Deviation

10.0K
To construct a confidence interval for a single unknown population mean μ, where the population standard deviation is known, we need sample mean as an estimate for μ and we need the margin of error. Here, the margin of error (EBM) is called the error bound for a population mean (abbreviated EBM). The sample mean is the point estimate of the unknown population mean μ.
The confidence interval estimate will have the form as follows:
(point estimate - error bound, point estimate +...

Summary

Cognitive decline in aging adults affects verbal memory. This study shows that verbal forward digit span, a measure of the phonological loop, decreases with age in Spanish adults.

Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Neuroscience
  • Human Aging Research

Background:

  • Working memory, specifically the phonological loop, is crucial for tasks like recalling and dialing numbers.
  • Age-related memory complaints are common, particularly difficulties with sequential information recall.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the developmental trajectory of verbal forward digit span in a Spanish adult population.
  • To assess how age, gender, and education influence the phonological loop's capacity.

Main Methods:

  • Administered a verbal digit span test to 987 participants aged 35-90.
  • Determined maximum digit span based on recall accuracy of presented series.
  • Collected demographic data on gender and educational attainment.

Main Results:

  • Verbal forward digit span significantly declines across the lifespan.
  • Age group, gender, and educational level were significant factors influencing digit span.
  • No significant interactions were found between the main factors.

Conclusions:

  • Age negatively impacts the phonological loop, as evidenced by reduced verbal forward digit span.
  • The observed digit span in this Spanish population was lower than in previously reported studies.
