Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) in detecting erroneous conservation judgments in children.
  • To differentiate neural activity between children who conserve and those who do not.

Main Methods:

  • Reanalysis of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data from children performing number conservation tasks.
  • Extraction of Blood Oxygen Level Dependent (BOLD) signal from the ACC and prefrontal regions of interest (ROIs).
  • Comparison of ACC activation during classic (conflict) and control (no conflict) conservation problems.

Main Results:

  • ACC activation increased during classic conservation problems for all children, regardless of correct or incorrect judgments.
  • Children who correctly conserved numbers showed greater activation in the right inferior frontal gyrus and right lateral middle frontal gyrus.
  • No difference in ACC activation was observed between conservers and non-conservers.

Conclusions:

  • Even children making conservation errors appear to detect the conflict in their judgments.
  • The difference between conservers and non-conservers may lie in the recruitment of prefrontal regions involved in inhibitory control.
  • Findings support the hypothesis that non-conserving children recognize the biased nature of their judgments.
