Background:

Seborrhoeic dermatitis is a prevalent chronic inflammatory skin condition affecting the scalp and face.
Treatment commonly involves antifungals, steroids, and other agents.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the efficacy of antifungal agents for facial and scalp seborrhoeic dermatitis in adolescents and adults.
To assess antifungal effectiveness in patients with HIV/AIDS.

Main Methods:

Systematic review and meta-analysis of 51 randomized controlled trials (9052 participants).
Searched multiple databases up to December 2014.
Assessed primary outcomes of symptom clearance and quality of life.

Main Results:

Ketoconazole and ciclopirox demonstrated superior efficacy over placebo in treating seborrhoeic dermatitis.
Ketoconazole showed comparable remission rates to steroids but with significantly fewer side effects.
Evidence for other antifungals, long-term effects, and quality of life impact was limited.

Conclusions:

Ketoconazole and ciclopirox are effective topical treatments for seborrhoeic dermatitis.
Further high-quality research is needed to assess long-term outcomes and quality of life.
Current evidence supports ketoconazole's favorable side effect profile compared to steroids.
