Background:

  • Workplace sitting time significantly contributes to overall sedentary behavior risks.
  • Height-adjustable workstations are a potential intervention to decrease sitting time among office workers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review controlled trials assessing height-adjustable workstations' impact on office workers' sitting time.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of these interventions in reducing occupational sedentary behavior.

Main Methods:

  • A comprehensive literature search was performed across multiple databases (Medline, PsychINFO, CENTRAL, EMBASE, PEDro) up to March 2014.
  • Included studies employed randomized or non-randomized controlled designs.
  • Grey literature and reference lists were also examined to identify relevant studies.

Main Results:

  • Five controlled trials involving 172 participants were included.
  • All studies indicated a reduction in occupational sitting time with height-adjustable workstations.
  • High risk of bias was noted across studies; meta-analysis was precluded by intervention heterogeneity.

Conclusions:

  • Current evidence is insufficient to definitively conclude the benefits of height-adjustable workstations on sedentary behavior and health outcomes.
  • Larger, longer-term controlled studies with diverse populations are required to establish firm conclusions.
