Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Pancreatic Diseases

Background:

  • Borderline resectable pancreatic cancer (BRPC) presents a diagnostic challenge, bridging resectable and locally advanced disease.
  • Historically, BRPC management lacked clear definition, leading to varied treatment approaches.
  • Recent advancements have improved understanding and treatment strategies for BRPC.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review current consensus guidelines for BRPC definition, diagnosis, and management.
  • To summarize key challenges and areas for future research in BRPC, as identified by the ISGPS.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of recent studies on BRPC management.
  • Analysis of consensus guidelines and expert recommendations.
  • Synthesis of findings from the International Study Group of Pancreatic Surgery (ISGPS).

Main Results:

  • Consensus guidelines now provide a framework for BRPC management.
  • Studies indicate that effective BRPC treatment can yield outcomes similar to resectable pancreatic cancer.
  • Specific areas requiring further investigation have been identified by the ISGPS.

Conclusions:

  • BRPC is an evolving entity with increasingly defined management pathways.
  • Standardized approaches to BRPC can improve patient outcomes.
  • Continued research is essential to address remaining challenges in BRPC care.
