Summary

Cyclical rectal bleeding is linked to intestinal endometriosis. Bleeding may result from mucosal tears caused by swelling of underlying endometriosis, not direct menstruation from the deposits.

  • Endometriotic deposits commonly involve the outer layers of the bowel wall.
  • Intramural hemorrhage is frequently absent in these cases.

Findings:

  • Mucosal involvement is not necessary for rectal bleeding in intestinal endometriosis.
  • The cyclical bleeding might be caused by transient mucosal tears due to swelling of ectopic endometrial tissue during menstruation.
